Barrow Angling Association – Autumn Update
Hello everyone,
As the evenings grow shorter and a crispness settles in the air, the departure of the osprey’s signals that the season is winding down. But don’t hang up your rods just yet—there’s good news from Ireleth! We’ve completed our final stocking of the year, introducing larger fish to help deter cormorants and offer rewarding winter sport. Anglers are reporting catching fish of around 3 lb. Please note: Ireleth is now catch and-release only until the next stocking in March 2026. This measure helps maintain healthy fish numbers throughout the colder months. Harlock has also produced a number of fish in recent weeks and is worth a visit if you fancy a more challenging venue.
Reservoir Conditions
Water levels across all reservoirs have rebounded well from summer lows and are currently high. This rise has helped suppress weed growth, though some patches remain. Naturally, fishing becomes more challenging at this time of year—but that’s part of the adventure.
Site Improvements
Harlock car park and wall have been fully restored and even slightly expanded following the overflow works. The stone level beneath the gates has been raised to prevent sheep from sneaking under with their signature “limbo dance.”
Work on the Poaka overflow is planned but not yet scheduled. We’ll keep members informed of any closures. The wooden platforms stored in the Poaka car park will be used for this project once it begins.
Membership & Stocking Success
Thanks to steady membership numbers, we’ve been able to maintain our stocking programme—nearly 7,000 fish introduced over the season. Please continue to encourage friends and family to join. A strong membership base ensures robust stocking and helps keep our waters thriving. Angling remains a rewarding and peaceful pursuit in stunning surroundings.
Annual General Meeting – Save the Date
Our AGM will be held on Monday, 01 December 2025 at 7:30pm, at the Royal British

Winter is incoming but it doesn’t mean you have to stop fishing. You can pull a sinking line to get away from the surface. Best time for fly fishing at this time of the year is 10am to 2 pm. Temperatures will have peaked in this window and flies will be about. Trout will even rise to a well-presented dry fly.
Flies – I recommend are nymphs, pheasant tails, Frazer nymphs and Diawl Bachs. Black spiders, buzzers and small emergers will work.
Dries – try hoppers, emergers, snatchers and JNN
Lures – Cats Whiskers and Cormorants should catch, Vivas, black and green Fritz or blobs.
Wets – predominantly black Zulus, Bibio and Kate McClaren.
Best line to use is a sink line D13 Intermediate.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. Tight lines and warm wishes as we head into the winter season!
